How to use it

Crochet a swatch at least 5 in (13 cm) square in the stitch the pattern uses.

Measure 4 in (10 cm) in the middle of the swatch and count the stitches and rows.

How it works
Gauge is the number of stitches and rows in a measured square. If you follow a pattern’s stitch counts with a different gauge, the finished piece scales by the ratio between the two: your size = pattern size × pattern stitches ÷ your stitches (and the same for rows and length).
More stitches than the pattern means your stitches are smaller, so the piece will come out smaller — try a larger hook. Fewer stitches means larger stitches — try a smaller hook. Change hooks rather than forcing your tension.
Common questions
Should I match stitch gauge or row gauge?
Stitch gauge first — it controls width, which is harder to adjust. Row gauge can often be fixed by working more or fewer rows.
Do I need to wash my swatch?
For garments and anything that will be washed, yes. Some yarns relax or shrink, which changes gauge.
